Clinical Supervision

Clinical supervision is a process that builds skill, deepens clinical judgment, and develops professional identity — inside a trusting relationship between supervisor and supervisee. A clinical supervisor is an experienced, licensed professional overseeing a clinician who has completed their educational and internship requirements and is working toward independent licensure.

Granville T. Freeman III is a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS) in the state of Georgia.

The Bernard Discrimination Model

The Bernard Discrimination Model of Supervision is a flexible approach that helps supervisors tailor their guidance to the unique needs of each supervisee. Developed by Janine Bernard, this model emphasizes that effective supervision requires the supervisor to shift between three primary roles: teacher, counselor, and consultant.

As a teacher, the supervisor provides instruction, feedback, and skill development to help the supervisee strengthen their clinical knowledge and abilities.

As a counselor, the supervisor supports the supervisee's personal and professional growth by helping them explore challenges, self-awareness, and areas that may impact their clinical work.

As a consultant, the supervisor collaborates with the supervisee by encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent clinical decision-making.

The model also focuses on three areas of supervisee development: intervention skills, conceptualization skills, and personalization skills. By considering the supervisee's current needs in each area, the supervisor can determine the most helpful way to provide support and feedback.

Ultimately, the Bernard Discrimination Model promotes a collaborative supervisory relationship where the supervisor adapts their approach to foster growth, confidence, ethical practice, and the development of the supervisee's professional identity.
